We're using Dirt 2 on PC... Dirt 2 opens up to a sweet looking Subaru STi doing a donunt around the Code-masters logo before speeding off, the splash screen pops up and you can go and get ready for your race. I feel a bit in the old days with the menu interaction being only controllable by the arrow keys. It's a sweet menu layout though, easy to get where you want, it's like your in the game already and you swap views to the map, the car outside your caravan (where people are walking around) etc...
When you select your car & track you can swap different things on the car such as the paint liveries and the rear-view mirror toys (dice, codemaster logo...) which is alright if you want to have say a 'lucky charm' flying around in the cockpit when you're driving.
After you've selected your car you'll go through the loading process which is relatively mid/slow... Versus other games but it's worth the wait, trust me. When you've loaded you'll be able to setup some cool features on your car such as the brake bias (front:rear), ride height, suspension stiffness... You can essentially control the physics of your car to some degree, like on baja tracks with jumps you'll want relatively plush suspension and a higher ride height whereas in rally-cross you'll want a shorter ride height and harder suspension.
The graphics when you drive are very well presented, the cars are well modeled and the tracks are visually pleasing to your eye, even though you'll be likely looking through a mud covered windscreen. The visuals effects are great, when you crash you really crash! Your wheels go hurdling into the bush, your bumper crunches like a potato chip and you're engine goes Kaput!
Gameplay is realistic in campaign mode, no matter what racing style your undertaking. For instance other AI cars crash too, they aren't perfect drivers like in the older racing games where the drivers were somewhat to-good-to-be-true. The in-game physics are really accurate, for example if you hit a bump on the track and your car veers off course you will find it hard to regain the control you had. You will have to master the life-like physics of putting your 'pedal to the metal' and counter-steering like crazy rather than hitting the anchors.
Overall it's a great game and you can't go wrong with it, personally I love off-roading and rally so it's my sort of game... Yet if you just love cars in general you'll still get a great thrill out of this. Great graphics, great game-play, alright multiplayer 8/10.
